HOME WORKOUTS TO STAY HEALTHY & GROUNDED

With isolation in full swing and no clear end point in sight it’s important to find a few little things every day that provide grounding. Working out might be the last thing on your mind during this stressful time or you might be missing regularly scheduled classes and gym sweat sessions. Whatever you’re feeling, spending mindful time with yourself and your body can go a long way in quieting anxiety, stretching out your back (oh to have the luxury of a proper home office!) and simply breaking up the day.

You don’t have to do it alone. The fitness community has come together to offer a plethora of exercise options to suit all tastes, activity and comfort levels. Remember that now is the time to be kind to yourself; you don’t have to aim for a six pack or an hour’s worth of daily strenuous activity — do what feels good and take your time. There’s no wrong way to go about movement in quarantine. Ten minutes or back to back classes, it all helps to make the body and mind feel healthier day to day.

Our list rounds up some of the best workouts available online today.

Yoga

Those who love and practice yoga already know that all you need is a mat to get going. No mat? You can always grab a towel and fold in half if the floor is particularly hard. Yoga is great for beginners, for quieting the mind, and for anyone with downstairs neighbours as no jumping is required.

Yoga with Adriene — the queen of YouTube yoga, her videos are ideal for all activity levels and time commitments.

Alomoves is an online yoga platform (with other styles of exercise thrown in); there’s a monthly fee but you can get a feel for it with a free trial first.

Lovers of power-style yoga will adore the CorePower Yoga on demand classes, some of which are now offered free of charge to all.

For classes in French, check out Mayashala Yoga offering free classes to all.

Pilates

Pilates is another beginner-friendly style of workout but there are different levels if you’re looking for a challenge. You don’t need any equipment and it’s especially great for the back and spine.

Trifecta Pilates on YouTube has numerous videos of varying length and complexity; perfect for a morning stretch or a forty-minute class.

East Of Eden live-streams pilates (plus yoga and barre!) classes every day; you can join with a membership, pay per class or get in touch with the studio directly if you can’t afford the full fees for a discount.

French sports journalist and pilates teacher Julie Pujols Benoit has lots of home workout ideas on her feed.

Barre

There might not be a ballerina inside each and every one of us but it doesn’t mean we can’t give their exercise regime a go. It’s another style of workout not requiring equipment though you might be asked to use the back of a chair from time to time.

Californiabarre will get you up and sweating with their live workouts over on Insta and they offer Zoom classes too.

Barrecore will bring their BarreLIVE classes directly to your home via Zoom; the first class is free with the option to pay for individual classes or a weekly pass. Book through their website.
