The spring style edit

I’m wearing - suede gilet, sunglasses, jeans, mocassins, ring, Hermès bag

As we begin to peel back winter’s layers, I start to assess my style and hone in on the contents of my wardrobe. Twice a year I go through my closet, giving my warm or cold weather clothes an edit - weeding out as I would a garden, the items that no longer serve me, bring me joy or that I just haven’t worn in a long time and that are probably past their sell-by date. It’s a ritual that I look forward to like a spring clean - selling unwanted items or giving them to charity, so they can have a new lease of life after they’ve been lying dormant. It’s a cathartic and cleansing process and one that I cannot recommend enough. Having too many clothes, especially when I wear a small capsule collection on rotation can be overwhelming, so I love having a clear out.

While my style ethos doesn’t change from season to season, as I believe in investing in timeless pieces that are created to last, I do love to refresh my wardrobe with a few fun items that will likely become future treasures. There are a few key pieces that I always keep in my spring wardrobe year on year, foundational items that can be worn again and again in a myriad of ways, such as lighter denim - I start swapping my dark washes for softer blues; an overcoat or trench - this style from last spring has served me well and will be staying put for the foreseeable; a pair of sneakers that can be worn with tailored pants or jeans, I’m a big fan of New Balance and now have a few pairs - these are currently on my wishlist. I also start packing away my heavy knits in favor of lighter cashmere and cotton - this knit from Jenni Kayne (use code Marissa15 for 15% off the site), became a key piece last year that I threw over my shoulders throughout the warmer months. A good blazer serves me well throughout the year and my most hardworking piece is this oversized black style that I wear all year round, but I also have a beige version. And also have my eye on a pair of Mary Janes, such as these from Aeyde.

Silhouettes continue to be oversized this season - especially denim, so go wider and baggier on the leg (this Everlane style is nice and affordable) if you want follow the trends a little more; love them or hate them (maybe they remind you a little to much of your adolescence), cargo pants are back - even one of my favorite brands for timeless style, Tôteme have created a pair, so that must mean they're worth investing in and The Frankie Shop has given its tailored pants a cargo twist by adding large pockets, see here - wear them with a tee and a blazer or a knit thrown over. Hemlines are long - the longer the better and denim skirts are back - here’s a great style from Arket that ticks the trend box, but that will last through the seasons. A trench remains a wardrobe staple for spring, but again I would opt for an oversized style like this one or a leather version.
