TRANSITIONAL BLAZERS & JACKETS FOR AUTUMN 2020

Transitional weather is really here in Paris. After a few days of serious rain, the city is back to feeling like summer but the evenings have an undeniable autumnal chill that I don’t mind at all. Going out for the night without a good jacket just isn’t wise anymore. I adore transitional weather. It’s not often you can pair knits with shorts or linen blazers with denim and sandals, so I make sure to enjoy this odd in between weather to the max. I started updating my wardrobe about two weeks ago by pulling out a few warmer pieces and adding a couple of new ones too. I’ve also updated my Capsule Autumn Wardrobe section so you can see what key wardrobe items I have on my radar.

Today, however, I want to talk about transitional jackets — a style essential for the next couple of months. As always, don’t feel like you need every single style I mention here, although over the years I’ve accumulated at least one of each, doubles when it comes to blazers. Shopping smartly means that I love bringing them out season after season, never feeling like the style has aged. For autumn 2020 I’ve added a linen Arket number to my wardrobe that’ll look just as good next spring and summer.

Blazers

Blazers are one of my style passions and I believe that a good one can take you to any occasion. There’s nothing I wouldn’t pair a blazer with as it instantly adds a chic flair, even to denim cut-offs and a t-shirt. I also love that the high-street now has incredible tailored styles on offer, with brands like Arket, & Other Stories, and COS doing some of the very best. My selection of blazers includes all price points to give everyone options for flattering and classic styles.

Quilted Jackets

When I first saw quilted jackets, I thought they were going to be a passing trend. I was pleasantly surprised to be proved wrong as the style has returned for a few seasons now and I’ve personally really enjoying styling it. A quilted jacket is the perfect mixture of casual and dressy, looking good on a countryside walk and at brunch, respectively. Not to mention that it keeps me warm when a hot day suddenly turns chilly come 7pm.

Belted Jackets

I wanted to include belted jackets as a separate category to blazers because I need both and wouldn’t possibly want to choose between them. I do love the tailored and often oversized silhouette of a blazer though sometimes I want to cinch in my waist too. Most often I’ll pair a belted jacket with a floaty skirt to help balance the shape of the outfit. The belts are often removable, so you’re getting a two-in-one.

Overshirts

This year has really given my style a new, casual dimension. I don’t think I’ve ever spent this much time in comfortable shoes, ever. With all that walking around and trying to meet friends outdoors as much as possible, I’ve embraced the more ‘off-duty"‘ aesthetic and I have to say I’m loving it. The overshirt is an important aspect of it; more relaxed than even a quilted or belted style and very easy to stuff into a tote when not needed. I’m always partial to a neutral shade, especially when it comes to checks. You can dress up an overshirt easily too, balance the oversized silhouette with skinny trousers and a chunky or high-heeled boot.

Boxy and Cropped Jackets

When creating this edit, I saw so many lovely cropped and boxy jackets that I couldn’t not include them. Let’s call it a micro-trend. This style never really takes off in popularity though I always spot a few of this shape in stores year after year. I think people struggle to style them, but they’re actually incredibly flattering; by adding volume on top and sitting above the hip, they draw attention upwards, balancing proportions. I love how they look with slim and skinny jeans, especially if a heel is involved, but a wider trouser and trainer combination would look equally chic and very fashion forward too.
