PIERRE JEANNERET BY SRELLE
When I moved into my new apartment earlier this year, I knew I wanted to start adding pieces that will stand the test of time. I’ve had my eye on the Srelle Pierre Jeanneret Easy Lounge Chair and bench for quite a while and I am so happy to finally be the proud owner of both. For those of you who don’t know, Pierre Jeanneret was a Swiss architect and product designer, specialising in minimalist design. He spent much of his career collaborating with his cousin, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, as well as Charlotte Perriand. He is most renowned for his ‘Easy Lounge Chair’, a wooden creation made out of predominantly rattan, which has since garnered iconic status and is one of the pieces that I now have sat in my living room. It came out of the Chandigarh furniture project that occurred during the 1950s when India’s Punjab government decided to build a new capital city; Chandigarh. Alongside many other architectural projects, Pierre was responsible for designing the blueprints of the furniture pieces that would be made for the government and public buildings.
Nowadays, Srelle produces Chandigarh furniture in Northern India using the same production techniques, standards and materials used during the early 1950s. Geography aside, I find them to be iconic furniture pieces for Parisian interior design. They go so well with the wooden flooring found in most Parisian apartments, not to mention the neutral tones which you already know I swoon over. For the moment, I have the bench by my bedroom window and the chair in the living room, but I may switch them around later. I’ve always had a thing for re-designing the layout of different rooms and these pieces make the whole process even more fun!
