THE COSY KNIT EDIT
I swear no matter how big and heavy of a winter coat I have, it never seems to be enough of a barrier from the windy Paris chill. And while most Parisians have mastered the art of layering, I find myself struggling to add on something else to my outfit; an old sweater that stretched out too quickly, a scratchy wool cardigan, or an ill-fitting knit that always seems to unravel. My wardrobe was missing a key piece…some cosy cashmere or woollen number that I could trust to keep me warm, slide my coat over with ease, and most importantly could transition my closet from autumn to winter; a staple that I could rely on season after season.
It was important for me to find knitted pieces that were neutral enough to go with the rest of my clothes and timeless in a way that could be carried on to the next year, but that still had a current structure and feel, something that could fit somewhere in between new knee-high boots and a vintage wool coat. Knits are another item on the staple wardrobe pieces list that are worth some investment. Take it from the Parisians; find a piece that works for your style, goes with just about anything else in your wardrobe, and will last a loooong time
Knit Wearing & Pairing tips:
Aim for tones that compliment the go-to coat and shoes you’ll be sporting for the season. Of course, creams and beiges are cool, but have you tried a colour-block or stripes?
It’s all about texture. Thick cable knits will add a pattern-like element while soft cashmere will keep you feeling cosy.
Don’t be afraid to bend your idea of what “neutral” means. Earthy greens and warm shades of cider add a bit of colour to the dull grey of winter.
Buttons, zippers and ties, oh my! I love a chunky tortoise shell button or a side-wrap cardigan, which helps accentuate a more feminine silhouette. A sweater with a zipper? Easy layering on the go.
Bell sleeves, a slouchy cowl neck, or even pockets will add a fresh style element. Opt for a cropped sweater when wearing high-waisted jeans, or one that can easily be tucked in to keep from hiding those feminine curves.
