Photographed in Pigalle, Paris.
The image of Jane Birkin sauntering through the Parisian streets with Serge Gainsbourg on one arm and a basket bag on the other is iconic. French clichés have made a welcome comeback of late - I'm thinking the leather beret by Dior that cropped up on heads at fashion week in September, following its renaissance on the catwalk last spring for AW17. So it's no surprise this bag (perhaps just as clichéd), has also been given a new lease of life by a wave of Parisian It-girls that began sporting the summery accessory a few seasons ago.
This past week almost had me convinced it was summer, although besides going lighter (my hair) I was not prepared! So out came the basket bag, which (to me) is basically summer in bag form - making me feel instantly a bit more summery, despite being pasty pale from months spent in grey Parisian winter weather. I picked this one up in Tokyo last year and it has since become a wardrobe staple.
Besides, one of the best things about a basket bag, is its affordability, options and uniqueness - if you go the extra mile to find a vintage one. If you don't have time to scour the shops, I've put together a few of my favourites below, to get you ready for warmer weather!
